Saberton Stores, Main Street, Pymoor. Saberton's Stores
Sadly a part of Pymoor village has now gone forever. Many of Pymoors residents were sorry to lose Saberton’s Stores which closed the door to customers on the 16th August 1986.
Mr Hugh Saberton opened this shop in 1920 when he was fifteen and later it was enlarged by taking in his fathers old smithy.
In 1937 Mr Horace Saberton took over from his brother and his sister Vera joined him during the war years. After Horace died in 1979 his wife Joan then worked with Vera and Joan’s daughter Cynthia helped with delivery.
The store has given a wonderful service to the people of Pymoor and also to a wider field.
Nearly everything could be purchased from this store, from groceries to clothes, prams to lawnmowers.
One could look in a catalogue and pick out a fur coat (approx. 26) or a mangle to wring the laundry and it would be supplied from the shop a few days later.
Mrs Alice Baker, a senior resident of Pymoor, recalls buying the first ladies bicycle at £3. 3s. 6d. (£3.42) and says it was a very good one. Mrs Baker tells how she bought her groceries there at the start of her married life and has continued to do so until the shop closed.
On Sunday 31st August 1986 the store once again opened to the public so that a wonderful collection of show cards and advertising posters through the years could be seen. It was delightful to see the gollies in all sorts of actions advertising a well known brand of marmalade and jams which brought back many memories to the viewing public.
The old catalogues were on display also. There was no charge to see the collection but donations could be given to Cancer Research. Teas were also served in the W.I. Hall opposite. As a result of this interesting afternoon 150 has been sent to Professor Mitchells Cancer Research Fund.
Vera and Joan must look back with pride for the years of service and dedication that they, and their family, have given to the Pymoor community both past and present.
